Stars & Swirls Summer 2020 Quilt Along - introduction

Welcome to the most unusual summer of our lives! Join me on a fantastic (a little self promotion) summer quilt along!

Stars & Swirls King, 110 x 110"

We are going to each make a quilt (in your choice of 4 different sizes) in the I-sew-lation of our own sewing rooms.

This is a pattern I've just finished designing and my good friend Brenda gave it the name. There are only 2 blocks in this quilt in addition to some setting triangles and a border. So it is quite straight forward and fairly easy to sew. We'll be using the Deb Tucker Studio 180 Designs rulers and I'll have some for sale. If you would like to purchase them, please contact me directly. I don't have them for sale yet on the website.

Large Square Squared $79 CDN

Wing Clipper 1 $31 CDN

I am going to be posting each step of the quilt along on the Meadow Rose Quilts blog page (this page). Each post will have the "Stars & Swirls Summer 2020 Quilt Along - followed by the step number so that you can easily search and find each step.

Here's the plan. Each week/blog post will have some video, text, still images and pdf downloads of the step or steps we'll be working on. You can join any time and work at your own pace. I would love your comments and questions and to see your pictures shared .

  1. Introduction, fabric choices and tools required. I'm not requiring you to register, so you can choose to join us or not once you have a better idea of what we are doing.

  2. Cutting tips and tricks. There are some interesting cuts for this quilt. I'll do a video and still picture demonstration for painless cutting. I'm a leftie, so I'll also be demonstrating left handed and right handed cutting.

  3. The Star blocks are made of 2 different sizes of flying geese units. We'll learn how to use the Studio 180 Wing Clipper and make the larger units.

  4. We'll finish the Star blocks by making the smaller flying geese units and putting the blocks together.

  5. Swirl Block/Snail Trail/Monkey Wrench are the same unit. For these blocks we'll be using the Studio 180 Large Square Squared Tool. You'll be amazed how quickly and easy these blocks go together.

  6. Putting it all together, the blocks in this quilt are set on point, so this requires just a bit of extra concentration. Pull out your phone and take pictures, pictures and more pictures! I'll give you some hints on making this step painless!

  7. Borders. The pattern calls for a single border but you can easily make the quilt a bit larger by making the single border larger or adding an additional border. I'm going to show you how I sew my borders and I've never had them wave back at me!

  8. We'll talk quilting and getting the quilt ready for quilting on your own or sending it out to a longarmer.
