Quilting Retreats
Why do quilter's retreat?
I thought of doing a survey, but came up with these responses on my own.
- a time away from home responsibilities
- dedicated sewing time
- great times with friends, old and new
- fun games and often great food
- shopping (who can go to a quilting retreat and not go fabric shopping?)
I went to my first quilting retreat in June 2001. I had joined 2 Canadian Quilt groups on line and a discussion was started about having a get together with local members. Shirley organized ours and we had our very first "Western Retreat" at the Nazarene College in Strathmore. this group has been going strong ever since. We now have a retreat at Sylvan Lake Christian Retreat Centre at Sylvan Lake. There are only a few (3 I think) girls who have been to every single retreat. I was doing really well, but missed the last 3 years. I went back again this year and had a blast!
It was great to touch base with old friends and make new ones too!
I've traveled to Ontario, Trail, and Winnipeg for quilting retreats. I've been to retreats where every moment was packed with classes and activities and some where we do our own thing.
I think I like the "do my own thing" better. I find it much more relaxing and satisfying.
The best retreats for me are when I sew, eat, visit, eat, sew, visit, sew, eat, sleep, shop. I like to spread out and make a mess and not worry about cleaning up till it's time to pack up and head home.
I've made new friendships. I've strengthened friendships and I've made lasting friendships.
Some retreats can be expensive if you have to travel distances, are staying at a hotel and taking classes from well know instructors. Some retreats can be quite inexpensive if you are willing to "camp" and chip in to provide meals with other retreaters.
Retreats are what you make of them. Plan to get away this year for some time of fellowship, fun and a whole lot of sewing.
Sometimes we'll get outside for a little bit of fresh air and get to see the sites.
I'm attending a retreat in Trail BC in September. There are a few tables left. Contact me if you are interested in joining us and I'll get you in touch with the coordinator.
