February is Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star Month #1

This year I've made a commitment to myself to focus on one of Deb Tucker's Studio 180 Design tools each month. January went by the wayside as I caught COVID and felt the full effects for much of the month. But I did get a quilt top completed using the Rapid Fire Hunter Star tool and the Confetti Stars pattern..

The goal is to spend time each month using the selected tool and then to work on a published pattern and make a quilt. I am hosting Studio 180 Design Sew Days on the 2nd Friday of each month and then offering a pattern class later in the month. I've already selected the pattern for the February class .....more about that later.

So, February is the Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star.

Each of Deb's tools comes with an instruction sheet. I like to download the PDF copies from the website and store in a binder. Here is the front page of the Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star instructions

You'll notice that this tool can make 10 different sizes of blocks. I'm going to start with the 3", 6", 9" and 12" Lemoyne Star blocks. Then I'm going to start playing with the blocks from the Technique Sheets.

The technique sheets are double sided, laminated instructions that work with the tool instructions to make different variations of the block. Again, the instructions are in multiple sizes. I'm going to try to make at least 2 sizes of each of the different blocks from the 7 Technique Sheets.

Good News! You can either purchase the technique sheets from me (or another retailer) or download a digital copy and print it yourself from the Studio 180 Design website.

I've chosen the Smooth Jazz pattern for the all day pattern class on February 17. We'll be working with a background fabric and Fat Quarters for the stars. I've already made a few of the blocks for another project and they were surprisingly easy to make. I have a darker grey textured print for the background and plan to use some of my hand dyed fabrics for the stars. This pattern is also available as a digital purchase.

If you are interested in either of these sew days, give me a shout. The website is under renovations and I've lost my LEARN pages so email is the best way to register or get more information.

  • Studio 180 Sew Day: February 10; 9am-9pm $40. You can come for 3 hours and learn how to use the tool or you can come for the whole 12 hours! I'll have a couple tools available for you to use in class to see how you like it. You can also purchase the tools from me. You'll need 0.5 meter of a background fabric and then some contrast (2-3) about a quarter of a meter each or Fat Quarters.

  • Smooth Jazz class: February 17; 10am-4pm. $60. This is a structured class where we'll learn the basics of using the tool and make a couple of blocks. You'll be well on your way to finishing the quilt in no time. Students must have their own pattern, but tools will be available for use in class and also available for purchase.

I'll continue this blog post series with some images of completed blocks.

In the mean time, Happy Quilting!
