I've done it again. I've signed up for another Monthly Block Challenge with other Studio 180 Design Certified Instructors. The rules/guidelines:

I've started cutting and sewing the units for the Square Dance BlockBuster. You can download your own free copy here.

I'm working on the 12" blocks so will need to make 4" units (12" / 3 units = 4").

First up are the Flying Geese Units. I'll trim these down with the Wing Clipper tool.

The Flying Geese units are made using the "no waste" method of sewing small squares onto a larger square. The larger square is the Geese and the smaller squares are the background.

A little trick: slide the small square away from the corner by less than 1/8" and when you trim these units to size, they will be perfect. The image below shows the difference between (light pink) matching the corners exactly and sliding the small square (dark pink) away from the corner just a little bit. It makes a big difference when it comes to trimming the units to size.

The other unit we need to make are the Square in a Square or the Economy block. We precision trim these using the Square Squared tool.

Accurate seam allowances work well and the tool makes it easy to trim to the precision size.

I used to think that all this trimming would be a waste of fabric, but I'm now convinced that using Studio 180 Tools are the way to go for accurate quilt blocks every time!

Next week I'll show you my finished quilt top. So, I'd better get stitching!
