Glued & Machine Stitched Binding

I am an impatient sewer.

I usually enjoy hand stitching the binding to the back of a quilt. I find it quite restful and a nice way to spend a few minutes/hours slow stitching. I get to cuddle under the quilt and enjoy it before I pass it on to the giftee.

Lately, I haven't had the time or desire to hand stitch. So, to get things done quickly I stitch the binding to the backside of the quilt, fold it to the front and machine stitch it in place.

I've tried pinning the binding in place to sew as well as using the binder clips, but neither worked well for me.....until I came across this Sharon Schamber's video showing how she glues her binding in place before stitching. I've been using this method for a few years, but since I didn't have one of those fancy glue dispensers, I used a regular bottle of water soluble glue. The problem was that I couldn't control the amount of glue. I tried find paint brushes, Qtips and tooth picks without any luck. This made a lot of sticky mess and I would have glue everywhere on my quilt, ironing board and fingers!

I was just helping my Mother clean and organize her sewing room in preparation for a move and we came across 2 (count them!) glue bottles. I grabbed them as Mum had never used them and didn't know what to do with them....She'll probably want one back once she reads this post!

These glue basting bottles and tips are perfect for appliques, but also perfect for gluing binding in place. Using these very fine tips for applying the glue to the quilt was the best part of my day!
